Alaska, you stole my Texas heart! - Our Alaskan Anniversary Vacation

Alaska, you stole my Texas heart! - Our Alaskan Anniversary Vacation

Let’s talk dream vacations for a moment.

Recently, my husband and I took a trip to Alaska to celebrate our 5th anniversary and let me tell you, it was unreal. From the mountainous views that left me at a loss for words to the chilly mornings that called for just 5 more minutes of snuggle time, every moment will be a memory worth treasuring. This was our first visit and we have already had talks of when our next trip will be because we were that impressed with the beautiful frontier that is Alaska. Our flight took us to Anchorage, a stunning place to visit and I recommend staying there if you should ever find yourself traveling to Alaska. This was actually my first flight! I was terrified (thanks to a lot of horror stories) but when we took off, I ended up being pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed taking flight!

Once we landed, vacation really began with check in at our stunning hotel. We stayed at Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood nestled inside the mountainous terrain, making for a breathtaking view outside of our room. We loved the cozy feel it had and it was the perfect place to end our days adventuring around town.

When we decided on Alaska as our destination, we took into account that we wanted to experience a different climate on our trip. We wanted to experience something we don’t get back home in our flat state meaning we took every opportunity to try new things and make adventurous choices with our plans. This resulted in some killer photos and unique memories.

One of my favorite moments from our trip has to be the night we saw the Northern Lights! We planned on trying to spot the Northern Lights so we downloaded an app that tracks them when we arrived. When the time came for the lights to make their appearance, we snuck off to a dark spot in the woods around midnight and waited for what others had described as a life changing event. Words cannot describe the absolute beauty these lights made as they presented themselves in the sky. It’s as if God himself revealed what a glimpse of His glory looked like. There is no other way to relay what the beauty of these green and purple lights truly looked like. This experience left us at a loss for words, numb to our surroundings and extremely grateful for the Creator of the earth and the beauty He makes at His whim. It was put best in His word, Psalm 8:3 “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place.”

The brilliance of the nature there had a way of making you feel alive, as if you were feeling everything for the first time and all once. As cliche as that may sound, it’s truth. I have never felt so awakened than in those moments spent in His nature.

Our adventures didn’t stop with nature however, we made some great connections with some of the locals. They took you in as if you were family, truly making you feel at home. As a photographer, photos are obviously very important to me so I made sure to schedule a session with a local photographer prior to our trip. Her name was Amanda and she did such an amazing job with our photos! Working with her was pleasure and you can be sure you’ll be seeing her work on a future blog post, so keep an eye out for those!

Another special moment was when my husband got his “souvenir” a tattoo of the mountains that we spent our vacation gawking at. It was so cool to watch the artist do his work and see how happy my husband was with his new piece of art. This is his way of bringing the places he travels to, home with him and I love seeing our adventures documented for a lifetime!

Overall, this trip was one for the books and we can’t wait till we go back to make even more memories there. Enjoy getting a glimpse into our vacation and feel free to share or comment, I would love to hear your thoughts and get to know you!
